Common Sense
From the time that you were a child, you’ve likely had it drilled into your head that you need to take care of your eyeglasses as if they were your own baby. After all, your folks certainly didn’t want to be springing for a new pair of glasses if it could be avoided, and as an adult, all of their admonishments probably make a whole lot more sense.
So you know how important it is to take care of your glasses, but the question remains:
how exactly do you take care of them? Let’s take a look at the top ten most important aspects of glasses care and some of the bad habits you probably need to break.
1. Use a microfiber cloth
A microfiber cloth is an excellent tool for cleaning your eyeglasses because it's gentle on the lenses and won't scratch them. Be sure to use a clean cloth, as debris or dirt can scratch the lenses.
Notice that we specifically said “microfiber cloth” and not just “soft cloth.” As plush as your hand towel might feel, it’s important to only use cloth that is specifically designed to clean glasses. It’s also important to replace them regularly and oil from your skin will seep into them.
2. Use a lens cleaner
Use a
lens cleaner specifically designed for eyeglasses to clean your lenses. Avoid using household cleaners, as they can damage the coating on your lenses. If you’re in a real pinch and simply cannot obtain any dedicated eyeglass cleaner, a mild dish soap can work but it’s important to not make a habit of this.
3. Don't use hot water
Hot water can damage the lenses and the frames of your eyeglasses. The lenses of your glasses are covered with a protective anti-glare coating, and hot water can strip that coating away pretty quickly. Hot water will also cause warpage to the frames of your glasses over time. Instead, use lukewarm water when cleaning them.
4. Handle with care
Be gentle when handling your eyeglasses. Avoid twisting or bending the frames, and
don't put them face down on any surface. We know how tempting it can be to fidget with them, but putting stress on the bridge or arms of your glasses will eventually cause them to break. Putting them face down is perhaps the best way to scratch the lenses.
5. Keep them in a case
At the end of a long day, it’s easy to just toss your glasses on your bedside table and forget about them, but when you're not wearing your eyeglasses, keep them in a protective case. This will prevent them from getting scratched or damaged.
6. Don't use your shirt
While it may be tempting to use your shirt to clean your eyeglasses, it's not recommended. Shirts can have debris or dirt that can scratch the lenses. Remember: microfiber or bust!
7. Avoid extreme temperatures
Don't expose your eyeglasses to extreme temperatures, such as leaving them in a hot car or outside in freezing weather. Frames will almost certainly warp if exposed to enough heat, and freezing temperatures can cause them to become brittle and break more easily.
8. Clean regularly
Clean your eyeglasses regularly, which ideally means daily or as needed. This will prevent the buildup of oils and debris on the lenses. Don’t just stop at the lenses either! You’ll be shocked at how quickly the bridge and arms of your glasses will get nasty.
9. Get them adjusted
If your eyeglasses feel loose or uncomfortable, get them adjusted by a professional. This will ensure that they fit properly and are comfortable to wear.
10. Replace as needed
When your eyeglasses become scratched or damaged, consider replacing them. This will ensure that you have clear and comfortable vision.
